Why do you feel this person deserves to be honored? : I am honored to nominate John Zweemer for Citizen of the Year. John represents the very best of Los Osos through his tireless service, quiet dedication, and unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of both our community and the animals who share it with us.

John is a regular volunteer at the animal shelter, where he shows up not for recognition but because he believes every animal deserves compassion. His steady presence, reliable help, and willingness to do any task needed have made him an invaluable part of the shelter’s daily operations.

His contributions extend far beyond the shelter walls. John is the person our community can always count on to step in when something needs to be done. He consistently cleans and maintains the center island along Los Osos Valley Road, ensuring it remains a welcoming and cared-for space for residents and visitors. He not only maintains it but decorates it throughout the year, bringing beauty, warmth, and a sense of togetherness to a part of town that thousands pass daily.

In times of need, John acts without hesitation. After major storms, he has been seen clearing debris from roadways to keep neighbors safe. He never waits to be asked, and he never seeks credit. He just does what he knows will help others, and he does it with humility.

These are only a few examples of the countless selfless acts John performs throughout the year. He is a steady, dependable presence whose actions continuously strengthen our community. Los Osos is genuinely a better, safer, and more compassionate place because of him.

For these reasons and many more, I wholeheartedly nominate John Zweemer for Citizen of the Year. He exemplifies service, kindness, and community spirit in everything he does.

Why do you feel this person deserves to be honored? :

John grew up in Los Osos and has been an essential contributor to LO community and culture for many years. He is a landscaper who volunteers his time to beautifying public spaces in LO. This, in itself, is admirable but that’s not all! His work at the animal shelter is some of the most devoted and inspiring work I have ever witnessed. The support that he has given the shelter over the years is unparalleled! From his own time, to training other volunteers, to field trips, to fostering- he is such an inspiration.

Growing up gay in the 80s/90s was tough and he persisted with a positive heart and devotion to the community. His husband is also a pillar of the community and works in public transportation for SLO county. I admire him and his work so much. If anyone deserves to be citizen of the year it is John. Please consider him!
